University of Nevada, Las Vegas has come a long way since its beginnings as Nevada Southern, the regional extension of the University of Nevada in Reno, Nev. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2007, the UNLV campus is now home to 28,000 students, 6,000 faculty members and facilities spread across 350 acres.
The neighborhood surrounding the campus, however, has seen its share of massive changes over that 50-year history. There was no neighborhood to speak of when the first buildings on Maryland Parkway appeared in the midst of the blank, desert landscape. But by the late 1960s, Maryland Parkway was a major thoroughfare on the east side of the Las Vegas Strip, and some of the oldest retail and residential buildings in the city can still be found along the parkway… READ MORE
